Fayette County’s middle and high schools racked up big wins at the 2024 Griffin RESA Regional Science & Engineering Fair.
The Regeneron ISEF Award was won by Vedita Sawhney and the trio of Colin Hacker, Asher Levine, and Timmy Thomas, all from McIntosh High. The four Chiefs will represent Griffin RESA at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair this May.
Students in both the Senior and Junior Divisions who placed 1st will represent Griffin RESA in the Georgia Science and Engineering Fair to be held in April 11-13, 2024.
A total of 21 local students earned 1st place in the senior division: 17 from McIntosh High, 1 from Sandy Creek, 1 from Starr’s Mill, and 2 from Whitewater.
High school first place winners are (McIntosh High) Athavi Anuraj, Brennan Coiro, Colin Hacker, Sara Hoti, Sahithi Jamched, Keira Lee, Asher Levine, Zackary Nizker, Elliot Oh, Lara Otico, Marlee Rafter, Krish Sarin, Vedita Sawhney, Timmy Thomas, Aadi Vaidya, Gavin Weida, Siah Yoon; (Sandy Creek) Aryn Parker; (Starr’s Mill) Lily Martin; and (Whitewater) Marley Hegtvedt, Ludovic Lythgoe.
A total of 9 students earned 1st place in the junior division: 1 from Bennett’s Mill Middle, 3 from JC Booth, 4 from Rising Starr, and 1 from Whitewater.
Middle school first place winners are (Bennett’s Mill Middle) Amari Kemp; (JC Booth) Catherine Feygin, Landon McDonald, Max Smiley; (Rising Starr) Benjamin Begley, Kayleah Condo, Demetrios Liaskos, Rostik Tishchenko; and (Whitewater) Caroline Moses.
Local students also won a number of special awards.
The Ricoh Sustainable Development Award was won by Colin Hacker, Asher Levine, and Timmy Thomas of McIntosh High.
The Society for In Vitro Biology Award was won by Vedita Sawhney of McIntosh.
The Yale Science and Engineering Association Award was won by Vedita Sawhney.
The US Metric Association Award was won by Marlee Rafter of McIntosh.
The United States Air Force Award was won by Athavi Anuraj, Siah Yoon, Colin Hacker, Asher Levine Timmy Thomas, Sara Hoti, Sahithi Jamched, Zackary Nizker, and Vedita Sawhney of McIntosh.
The Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge Award was won by Kayleah Condo of Rising Starr Middle, Audrey McGovern of Bennett’s Mill Middle, and Siri Oduaran of Whitewater Middle.
The Griffin RESA Regional Science & Engineering Fair is an affiliated fair of the Georgia Science & Engineering Fair (GSEF). The Griffin RESA Regional Science and Engineering Fair is a competition for middle and high school students attending Butts, Fayette, Henry, Lamar, Newton, Pike, Spalding, and Upson county school systems.
