Fayette County High students participated in a mock trial, bringing concepts from class to life while serving as the jury.

Students in Mario Hoyle’s Legal Environment in Business class in the Entrepreneurship pathway went on a field trip to the State Bar of Georgia to study how search and seizure policies work in schools, including differences between a search by police and school officials.

Rose Glass, parent of a FCHS student and president of the school’s PTSO, won the opportunity to be judge for a day on a previous field trip. She was behind the bench, and students served as the jury with the challenging responsibility to decide, based on evidence, the fate of a student accused of smoking in the bathroom.

“It is my hope that the students takeaway of the mock trial experience allowed them to appreciate the opportunity to come together and simulate on civil and criminal realities, with witnesses, plaintiffs, and everything in between,” said Glass. “Mock trials are great opportunities for students to learn foundational frameworks of how our legal system is structured. Additionally, they can gain great debate and public speaking readiness.”
