An Ohio man whose burglary attempt three months ago ended when he was shot by a Fayette homeowner is out of the hospital and in jail.
Michael Brooks II of Columbus, Ohio, was listed on the Fayette County Jail log as having been picked up by Fayette County Sheriff’s Office deputies Dec. 15 at Grady Hospital. He faces felony charges in Fayette of burglary, theft by receiving stolen property and home invasion.
Brooks was initially apprehended Sept. 14 at the residence he allegedly broke into, where the homeowner was forced to defend his family before deputies arrived “by discharging a firearm, which resulted in injuries to the intruder,” Sheriff Barry Babb stated at the time. No charges were filed against the homeowner.
Deputies at the residence found a red Ford truck that was reported stolen out of Ohio and displayed a license plate from a different state. Officials later said that Brooks has an extensive criminal history and is wanted in connection with a Sept. 9 home invasion and fatal stabbing of a woman in Ohio, as well as the hijacking of the truck.
Brooks spent the last three months in the hospital due to his injuries. It is not known whether authorities in Ohio will request his extradition.
Dear Tweety/Fr. Epps—And you find it difficult to understand why people have a problem with your opinions?!
Doesn’t your quip seem at all incongruous with being a follower of Jesus the Christ (and a priest/bishop who represents His teachings)?!
Surely the criminal act that forced a homeowner to defend his family was justified; but also a tragedy for all involved. Nothing to be rejoiced over. Nor boasted about.
Please consider dialing back on your glee at comeuppance.
Your comment sounds less like a warning than a goal on your “Bucket List”.
Grace and Peace,
Suz – Perhaps it is your point of view that is out of touch. There was no rejoicing in his post. That’s all you.
His message was actually compassionate – – to prevent a recurrence of this home invasion and tragic results with a clear warning to anyone else who might try it. We should all agree with him. Don’t do it, as you have a high likelihood of exiting feet first.
It is good to see you admit that the defense of home and life (or lives) is justified. Maybe you’re getting wiser as life goes on. Merry Christmas!
2¢, you are being either disingenuous or naive if you cannot read the tone of Tweety’s post. It’s pure tough guy boasting how he’ll kill you if you try to rob his home. There’s no compassion there. And Suz is 100% correct that such a “memo to intruders” is 100% opposite the message of Christianity. If Tweety is a priest in the Christian faith, he is doing a poor job of representing the Christ who said when someone asks for your coat, give him your cloak, too.
Who deserves compassion here? The homeowner IMHO
Hiya Spyglass—
Of course the homeowner deserves compassion. As well as his family.
But who also NEEDS it?
And who more that Christians should understand this?
Suz – when an intruder breaks into your home, he’s not coming looking for compassion. He is there to steal, kill, and/or destroy. There is zero compassion at that moment that a thief is caught in the act – especially if the thief is armed. It’s kill or be killed.
If he’s coming to you outside of burglary – asking for compassion – of course we’re called to be compassionate. But in that moment of crime, the theif needs to know the possible ramifications of his actions.
VJax – So you disagree with Suz and agree with me that Tweety’s post is not rejoicing. Instead, you want us to believe only you can divine that his real intent is “tough guy boasting”? Riiiiiight.
Your analogy is false. While charity and generosity to others is a Christian obligation, that does not make any sense here.
This criminal has an “extensive” rap sheet and is wanted for another home invasion, murder and carjacking in Ohio. He was not breaking and entering to ask for a coat.
There is no prohibition in Christianity against defending oneself or other innocents. Even Suz is on board with that.
Hello, the_wing_t
My sincere apology if I indicated any judgement (let alone any blame) of the home-owner. And by the way, I don’t think Vjax inferred that.
We were not commenting on the initial report, but Fr. Epp’s response to it.
I still stand by my impression that his “Memo to intruders from up North…When you drive South, the rules change.” was less a warning than crowing.
As for “zero compassion”…surely every life taken (even as a last resort and deemed justified) is regrettable, and worthy of our compassionate sorrow.
For all involved. Worthy or not. Requested or not.
For Christians, it is our commandment.
Hello, My.02 (and thank you for the holiday wishes).
As for getting wiser, I will leave that to others.
My one goal–indeed my commandment–is to love (as I have been loved).
It would not surprise me to learn that they are one and the same.
Perhaps the foolishness of love IS the greatest wisdom of all.
It seems to me that is the very reason we celebrate the Incarnation of our merciful Father! We stand awed by foolish Love, lavished upon the whole world.
Count me in.
Memo to intruders from up North…When you drive South, the rules change. If you break into an occupied home, you have a fair chance of not leaving that violated home alive. This is 2nd Amendment territory.
Well said…FAFO
Fr. Epps—
Perhaps the response by Spyglass will give you pause.
You are a priest and like it or not, your words carry weight.
Spyglass reacts to your comment, “Well said…FAFO”.
That is, F around and find out.
A sad substitution for AMEN.
Merry Christmas…don’t rob people…
Amen spyglass… and merry Christmas to you as well.
Hello again, Spyglass—
“Merry Christmas” by all means!
And “don’t rob people” is fine advice.
It is the implied “OR ELSE!” that troubles me.
