UPDATED — GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Fayette County

Fayetteville, Fayette County, GA (December 10, 2023) The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting in Fayetteville, Fayette County, Georgia. The Fayetteville Police Department asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on December 9, 2023.  One man, identified as Tavares Sanchez Richardson, age 20, was shot and injured.  No officers were injured in this incident.

The preliminary information indicates on Saturday, December 9, 2023, at about 4:00 p.m., the Fayetteville Police Department was dispatched to a domestic disturbance involving Tavares Richardson, near Paces Drive and Beauregard Boulevard.

A Fayetteville Police Officer stopped Richardson and asked for ID.   In response, Richardson grabbed a gun from his waistband and began to run.  The officer fired shots and hit Richardson.  Police provided first aid on the scene and took Richardson to Grady Hospital for treatment.

This investigation is active and ongoing. This is 99th officer involved shooting the GBI has been asked to investigate in 2023.

EARLIER STORY (SATURDAY) — 

A Fayetteville police officer shot and wounded a suspect carrying a weapon following a domestic dispute Saturday afternoon, police said Dec. 9. The wounded suspect is being treated in an Atlanta area hospital and his condition is unknown. No officers were hurt, police said.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been requested on the behalf of the Fayetteville Police Department to investigate an officer involved shooting which occurred on Dec. 9 at approximately 4:00 p.m.

“Officers with the Fayetteville Police Department were dispatched to the area of Paces Court in reference to a driver who had pulled over in the area to report a domestic dispute occurring in the back seat of their vehicle which involved another male and female,” according to a police news release.

The caller reported to the dispatcher that the male left the area on foot and was wearing a grey jumpsuit and had a firearm, police said.

“Officers encountered the subject in the area of Beauregard Boulevard and Paces Drive and during the course of the interaction a Fayetteville Police Officer discharged their weapon, striking the subject,” police said.

The subject was transported to an Atlanta area hospital for treatment and his condition remains unknown at this time. The area will remain shut down during the investigation. There is currently no further threat to the public relating to this incident, police said.

The site is off Beauregard Boulevard between Bates Avenue and Hunters Glen, less than a mile southwest of downtown Fayetteville.
