McIntosh High biology students studied plasma cell membrane structure with a bubble lab.

In order to understand the properties of plasma cell membranes and how the cell can help maintain balance in the body, students used bubbles, straws, and strings to make their own “membranes.”

Bubbles help model 6 properties of cell membranes: flexibility, ability to repair, using transport protein channels to move substances through, creating gap junctions between cells, and how organelles are inside the cell. Students also love it as a brief bit of bubble therapy and a fun way to learn a key concept.
