Inman investigates worms

They know how worms wiggle at Inman Elementary. As they learned about vertebrates and invertebrates, students in the 5th grade classes of Laura Crews and Desiree Pacheco studied night crawlers and hornworms to investigate how worms move.

By comparing them to various other animals (and humans, too!), students determined that worms do not have a backbone. From there, they could explain and describe the differences between a vertebrate and invertebrate. They also explored measurement tools to incorporate into other units in the future.

To really dig into the assignment, they included writing by responding to the book “Diary of a Worm” and used math to weigh and measure the worm’s length.
