They know how to rake in the green at Peachtree City Elementary. The Green Gang team of Parks Richardson, Dael Kim, Joshua Parks, and Bobby Sitler from April Mobley’s 5th grade class was crowned the elementary school winner for Congressional District 3 in the Stock Market Game spring competition.
The top quartet turned a hypothetical $100,000 into more than $121,000 in the 10-week spring stock market trading session, making them and their school the top earners in their congressional district for their grade level.
The Stock Market Game, sponsored by the Georgia Council on Economic Education, gives teachers a tool for showing students how opportunity cost, scarcity, trade, price incentive, and many other economic concepts play out in the financial institutions they hear about on the daily news. The Stock Market Game offers students a safe and pain-free place to learn some of the life lessons of a market economy.
Mobley shows her students the importance of saving and investing from a young age.
“I want students to learn how investing money will benefit them in real life,” said Mobley. “Even though investing in stock does have its risks, the average annual return for the past 90 years has been about 9.8% for long-term investments in the stock market.”
