The Georgia Department of Education has released the AP (Advanced Placement) Honor Schools for 2022 with all five of Fayette’s high schools earning recognition for the number of AP courses taken by students and the percentage of students passing the exams.
AP courses and exams give students the opportunity to access college-level learning opportunities, and potentially earn college course credits. Fayette’s high schools have been included in categories on the AP Honor School list since the recognition began in 2008.
“We are committed to expanding opportunities for Georgia students, including in advanced and accelerated coursework,” State School Superintendent Richard Woods said. “I offer my sincere congratulations to each of this year’s AP Honor Schools, and thank each teacher, student, and school leader who worked hard to create strong AP opportunities in these Georgia schools.”
The 2022 AP Honor Schools are named in eight categories, based on the results of 2021 AP courses and exams.
Fayette County High, McIntosh High, Sandy Creek High, Starr’s Mill High, and Whitewater High are all listed as AP STEM schools with a minimum of five students testing in at least four AP STEM courses.
McIntosh, Starr’s Mill, and Whitewater are among the schools making the list for AP STEM Achievement Schools. These are schools where students are testing in at least two AP math courses and two AP science courses and at least 40 percent of the exams earn a score of 3 or higher (students must score at least a 3 to potentially receive college credit for a course).
Fayette County and Sandy Creek are listed as AP Access and Support Schools with at least 30% of AP exams taken by students who identified themselves as African-American and/or Hispanic and 30% of all AP exams earning scores of 3 or higher.
McIntosh and Starr’s Mill are listed as both AP Humanities Schools and AP Humanities Achievement Schools, with Humanities Schools at a minimum of five students testing in each of the AP categories and Achievement Schools seeing at least 50% of all AP Humanities exams earning scores of 3 or higher.
McIntosh, Starr’s Mill, and Whitewater are AP Schools of Distinction with at least 20% of the total student population taking AP exams and at least 50% of all AP exams earning scores of 3 or higher.
