A Jonesboro man is in custody on more than a half-dozen criminal charges following a March 7 incident at a residence in north Fayette County in which he assaulted and imprisoned his ex-girlfriend, according to Fayette County Sheriff Barry Babb. The woman was assisted by two good Samaritans who intervened.

Montrell Jeremiah Towns, 25, was charged with burglary, aggravated assault, false imprisonment, battery, aggravated stalking, criminal damage to property, two counts of simple battery and felony probation violation, according to Fayette County Jail records.

Sheriff Babb said deputies on March 7 responded to a Greenview Circle residence off Milam Road in north Fayette in reference to what was initially a burglary call.

Arriving at the scene, deputies were told by the female resident that she received phone calls with no ID showing on the screen. She subsequently heard knocking, then banging, at the front door, and recognized Towns’ voice, her ex-boyfriend, Babb said.

Towns burst through the door and physically assaulted the woman, holding her against her will for some time, said Babb.

The woman at one point was able to flee the residence through the back door, with Towns chasing and catching up to her, Babb noted from the report.

The two fell to the ground with Towns holding the woman down. It was at that point that a father and son passing nearby in their vehicle saw what was happening and intervened, Babb said.

After an altercation with the father and son, along with damage done to their vehicle, Towns fled the scene, Babb noted.

Babb said that due to Town’s violent past, investigators requested the assistance of the U.S. Marshal’s Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force.

Towns was located on March 11 and was taken into custody.

Babb thanked the task force for the assistance.
