Oak Grove art classes have fun with fiber

Oak Grove Elementary students love hands-on learning. Art classes at the school have been focusing on fiber and learning how to sew their very own creations.

Each year at the same time, 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders sew. The projects are varied, with 3rd graders sewing their own pillows, and 4th graders repairing stuffed animals for the annual Stitches of Love campaign. Some even bring in their own clothing to mend while they learn.

Oak Grove art teacher Johnna Davis hopes her students learn a life-long skill.

“It is my desire that the artists here at the Grove will leave with a sense of independence, the ability to fix their clothing, and think creatively about problem solving.”
