Fayetteville police are investigating what appears to be the Dec. 8 accidental death of a 4-month-old baby who slipped off a mattress and suffocated after being wedged between the mattress and the wall.

Fayetteville Police Department spokesman Chad Myers said the 4-month-old male infant was sleeping in the bed with a parent. Sometime during the early hours of Dec. 8, the baby slipped off the bed, an elevated air mattress, and became wedged between the mattress and the wall.

Myers said the baby suffocated.

The preliminary investigation showed that the death was unintentional and accidental, Myers said, adding that an autopsy will be conducted.

Myers said investigators will await the autopsy results and meet with the district attorney to determine if charges are appropriate.
