A Douglas man after fleeing from officers was charged Sept. 2 with stealing items in mailboxes from residences near Ga. Highway 54 and Flat Creek Road.

Nathan R. Goodwin, 26, was charged with theft by receiving stolen property, littering, two counts of theft by taking and four counts of financial identity fraud, according to Fayette County Jail records.

Peachtree City Police Department spokesman Chris Hyatt said a suspicious person at approximately 1 a.m. was observed by a patrol unit along Hwy. 54 near the pedestrian bridge between Flat Creek Road and Northlake Drive.

The man left the roadway, and was spotted by an officer who shined a spotlight on him, said Hyatt, adding that the man dropped what was later determined to be stolen mail as he fled the area.

Goodwin was subsequently located at The Avenue retail area a short distance away, Hyatt said.

Hyatt said Goodwin had been in possession of mail he had taken from three mailboxes at the Ridgelake Condos at Flat Creek Road and Hwy. 54, adding that a total of six mailboxes had been opened.

Goodwin was also in possession of a drivers’ license stolen in Griffin, Hyatt added.

Hyatt said Goodwin and his girlfriend had been staying at a local hotel.
