A Hampton woman employed by Walmart in Fayetteville was arrested Jan. 8 on 14 counts of theft by taking during November and December.

Carmen J. Lopez, 25, was charged with 14 counts of theft by taking, according to Fayette County Jail records.

Fayetteville Police Department spokesperson Ann Marie Burdett said officers were contacted by the Fayetteville Wal-Mart Loss Prevention Officer about an employee, Carmen Lopez, who had been under investigation for theft of Wal-Mart’s merchandise.

Jail records indicated that the theft charges stemmed from incidents during the period of Nov. 30 through Dec. 19.

Burdett said Lopez was observed on several occasions to have retrieved merchandise from the shelves, taking them to a register and then refunding the merchandise to her personal account.

Once Wal-Mart completed their investigation, Fayetteville Police were contacted to arrest and seek warrants for the offender for multiple counts of theft by taking, Burdett said.
