A Griffin man being boarded in the Fayette County Jail and awaiting a trial for murder in a Spalding County case now faces additional charges for a Dec. 27 attack on a detention officer.
Sheriff Barry Babb said 23-year-old David R. Blalock had been housed at the Fayette County Jail since October while he awaited trial on a murder charge from Spalding County.
Blalock on Dec. 27 was told to bring an item from his cell during a cleaning activity. Upon exiting the cell, he put the item on the floor then attacked the detention officer, hitting him in the face with a closed fist and attempting to remove the Taser from the officer’s belt, Babb said.
Unable to do so, Blalock began running down the hallway where he was taken into custody, said Babb.
Blalock was charged with simple battery against an officer, criminal interference with government property, riot in a penal institution, removal of weapon from officer and false imprisonment, according to Fayette County Jail records.
In another incident, an Amazon driver on Dec. 27 who left her vehicle at a designated parking lot on Ga. Highway 314 returned to find that her unlocked vehicle had been ransacked but nothing taken, said Babb.
On Dec. 28, deputies responded to a salvage yard on Roberts Road where an employee reported that his vehicle had been entered, and finding that a tablet computer, driver’s license, credit card, shoes and boots had been stolen. The vehicle owner said he left the window on the rear driver’s door cracked, Babb said.
