An Aug. 24 fire at Fayette Floor and Wallcovering on Stonewall Avenue near downtown Fayetteville resulted in the store experiencing significant interior damage.
Fayetteville Fire Chief Alan Jones said employees arriving at the store at approximately 6:55 a.m. saw flames and smoke inside the building on Stonewall Avenue.
Fire units arrived and spotted a hole in the floor, necessitating entry from the rear to access the basement area, Jones said. Firefighters entered the basement and pushed to the front area of the store.
“The bulk of the fire was knocked down in 15-20 minutes,” said Jones.
Jones said the building will likely have to be gutted given the significant damage and structural instability in the interior, along with smoke and heat damage.
Jones said one firefighter was injured after the fire was extinguished when he twisted his knee on a hose line.
It appears the fire was accidental and is currently under investigation, said Jones.
Jones thanked Fayette County Fire units for their automatic aid response at the scene, and the county ambulance crew who assisted the injured firefighter.
