McIntosh will be defending both of its AAAAA state soccer titles in a doubleheader Friday at Mercer University.
The girls face Whitewater at 5 p.m. McIntosh will be playing for its third consecutive AAAAA title and its sixth state crown in eight years, having won the AAAA championship in 2011 and 2012 as well as the AAAAA title in 2014. The intracounty matchup guarantees that this will be the fifth straight year the AAAAA champion is from Fayette County, since Starr’s Mill won it all in 2015. (The 2013 champ was next door at Northgate.)
Whitewater reached the final round with a 3-0 win over Starr’s Mill. McIntosh defeated Flowery Branch 3-2 in overtime to claim the other spot.
This is the 14th time in school history that McIntosh is playing in a girls state championship match.
The McIntosh boys face Johnson-Gainesville at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Mercer. Johnson defeated Starr’s Mill 4-1 in its semifinal, while McIntosh prevailed against Decatur on penalty kicks after a scoreless match.
In addition to last year’s crown, McIntosh won the AAAAA boys state title in 2013 and 2014.
