A July 8 shooting in south Coweta County resulted in the death of the son-in-law of the homeowner.

Twenty-one-year-old Brandon Jonathan Kippa was shot and killed by his father-in-law, 59-year-old Virgil Lewis Pitts, at Pitts’ home on Bertus Hunter Road, approximately two miles east of Moreland, according to Chief Deputy James Yarbrough with the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office.

Yarbrough said the incident occurred just before 9 p.m. and was the result of family violence issues where the two men were tussling over a handgun.

There are no current charges against Pitts, said Yarbrough, adding that the matter will be presented to the Coweta County district attorney.

Investigators are awaiting toxicology reports, Yarbrough added.

Yarbrough said Kippa was involved several years ago in shooting electrical transformers in the Thomas Crossroads area.
