A confirmed EF1 tornado touched down in east Coweta County on April 5. The tornado resulted in no injuries though one barn was destroyed.

Coweta County Emergency Management Director Jay Jones said an EF1 tornado, confirmed by the National Weather Service, touched down between approximately 2-2:30 p.m.

Jones said the tornado first touched down in the area of Ga. Highway 154, then along Bob Smith Road and finally in the area of Ga. Highway 16 East.

There were no reports of injuries from the tornado, though one barn was destroyed and, countywide, there were 21 reports of downed trees and power lines, said Jones.

“We dodged a bullet,” Jones said in terms of the lack of injuries and minimal damage to property.

Jones said the county severe weather alert sirens activated during the storm. Coweta has a total of 28 sirens and is applying for a grant to add another to the system.

There have been 23 tornados that have touched down in Coweta since 1950, said Jones.
