The fountain was built by county staff in 1996. The construction was accomplished using a lower-grade granite which was difficult to repair, staff said.

The project calls for leveling and resetting brick pavers, adding new granite caps and inlays and cast-stone molding, base and facade.

The proposal included adding medium-grade granite and to use cast stone on the facade and the addition of color-changing LED lights.

A suggestion by Commissioner Steve Brown, and accepted by commissioners, was to add metal strips along the top surface to impede the use of skateboards.

The project, approved for up to $65,000, will use available community improvement program funds.

On another matter, commissioners by unanimous vote approved the submission of an application for a $400,000 grant from the Georgia Transportation Infrastructure Bank for the intersection of Veterans Parkway, Ga. Highway 92 and Westbridge Road.

The project is funded by the 2004 SPLOST (special purpose local option sales tax), with county staff saying the grant, if approved, would help with construction costs.

Veterans Parkway begins at Ga. Highway 54 on Fayetteville’s west side and extends to Hwy. 92. The only portion of the Veterans Parkway not open is the small section adjacent on the west side of Hwy. 92.
