Fayette County School Superintendent Dr. Joseph Barrow has been named Georgia’s 2017 Superintendent of the Year by the Georgia School Superintendents Association (GSSA).
Barrow was named a finalist earlier this year along with Dr. Jason Branch of Oconee County Schools, Dr. Allen McCannon of Madison County Schools and Dr. Gordon Pritz of Douglas County Schools.
A former president of GSSA, Barrow was hired by the Fayette County Board of Education in April 2013.
Prior to his time in Fayette, Barrow was superintendent of Ware County Schools in southeast Georgia.
“This marks the second consecutive year that Barrow has been named a finalist for the state’s highest honor bestowed to a superintendent,” said school system spokesperson Melinda Berry-Dreisbach. “A total of 17 nominations were received from throughout the state for this year’s competition.”
Berry-Dreisbach said Barrow will represent the state in national competition.
That will be at the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) National School Superintendent of the Year competition.
The announcement of Georgia’s superintendent of the year was made at the annual GSSA/Georgia School Boards Association conference held on Dec. 2.
