The Heritage Community Foundation presented a grant Oct. 18 to Connecting Henry executive director Susan Crumbley and other staff members and volunteers. Students enrolled in the nonprofit’s SWAG program (Students Working To Achieve Greatness) were also on hand for the presentation.
The $2,800 grant will be used to help meet some of the needs of the SWAG program. Specifically, funding will be used to pay for official GED tests for ten students in all four content areas (Reasoning through Language Arts, Mathematical Reasoning, Social Studies & Science) and to purchase a year’s subscription for online GED portal software for ten licensees.
Connecting Henry, a nonprofit organization, is the local branch of the Georgia Family Connection in Henry County which assists with planning, implementing or incubating programs and services to strengthen children and families. The organization fields calls from individuals, non-profit organizations, churches and businesses to link them to existing resources within the community. SWAG, one of Connecting Henry’s initiatives, is an on-going, year-round program. New participants are accepted year-round; however, the Workforce Innovation Opportunity Act (WIOA) by which SWAG is governed states that underage students must be out of school for one full quarter before being eligible for enrolling in the program. A participant can move through the program in as little as three months or up to two years depending upon their engagement & motivation to succeed. Participants are sent for official testing as soon as they score “Likely to Pass” on the online GED practice tests.
