Work at the new Leroy Johnson Park off Ga. Highway 16 in Senoia continues. The Coweta County Commission on Nov. 1 approved a $360,000 low bid for the construction of restrooms and a concession stand at the park expected to open next year.

The low bid for restrooms and the concession stand came from Five Star Renovations for a total of $360,291 and was approved by commissioners.

The only other bid received was from Tomco Construction at $498,450.

Senoia and Coweta County in early 2013 approved an intergovernmental agreement that will culminate in the new county park situated on 49.4 acres along Hwy. 16 and Harper Road on the city’s west side.

It has been two years since the groundbreaking for Leroy Johnson Park.

Expected to open sometime in 2017, the park will feature eight baseball fields, two football/soccer fields, a gymnasium of up to 10,000 sq. ft, tennis courts and a tot lot.

Amenities at the park will be lighted, officials said.

The park is expected to be completed in phases and will be accessed from Hwy. 16.

A work in progress spanning years, then-commission Chairman Bob Blackburn at the 2014 groundbreaking said, “The new Leroy Johnson Park honors not only the former commissioner, but all those who have had an integral role in making sports a vital part of the Senoia community. We gather here today because Senoia and the surrounding area continues to grow and prosper. The city and county understand the need for additional recreational facilities for all to enjoy.”
