The Fayette County High School Class of 1946 celebrated its 70th class reunion Oct. 1 at Broadway Diner in Fayetteville.

Of the 33 members of the class, 13 are still living and eight attended the reunion: Abb Burch, Jo Crawley Ballard, Regina Davis Godby, Travis Hardy, J.C. Newton, Helen Peek Gausden, Joyce Tate Bannister and Carol Walker Erchak.

They missed their longtime senior class president, Louise Lee Knowles, who passed away May 1 of this year. There was a prayer and special recognition of Louise and her 70 years of service to her classmates.

Needless to say, there  have been many changes in Fayette County since the class graduated less than a year after World War II ended. Highway 54 was the only paved road at the time, and the five school buses that traversed the county’s dirt roads often got stuck in the mud. There was no football team or marching band, but the Tigers did have both boys and girls basketball and a championship baseball team. The high school at that time was located on Stonewall Avenue, where the Board of Education offices are now. It burned to the ground in 1954.

Class members are already looking forward to their 71st reunion on the first Saturday in October 2017.
