A portion of the west side of the Ga. Highway 92/Hood Avenue realignment project in Fayetteville is expected to open on June 8. The partial opening will route Hood Avenue traffic using Ga. Highway 85 through a part of the new roundabout.
Fayetteville Public Services Director Chris Hindman said June 8 is the planned date for traffic on Hood Avenue heading east toward Hwy. 85 to be routed through a portion of the new roundabout and on to Hwy. 92 near the intersection with Hwy. 85.
Similarly, traffic heading south on Hwy. 85 wanting to access Hood Avenue will turn right onto Hwy. 92 and pass through the roundabout and onto Hood Avenue.
Essentially, two of the four legs on the roundabout will be functional on June 8.
The new routing means that the portion of Hood Avenue adjacent to the roundabout will be closed to give construction crews the time and space to do required work so the full roundabout can open later this summer.
As for Hwy. 92 traffic, both lanes will continue to use the highway and roadway until the traffic light at the intersection of highways 85 and 92 can be moved can be moved one block to the south where it will be located at Hwy. 85 and Hood Avenue.
Hindman said he hoped to have the entire realignment project’s west side work completed by the end of July. That time frame depends significantly on the Georgia Department of Transportation which is responsible for moving the traffic signal.
Once the light is in place the new roundabout will open fully.
Work on the east side of the realignment project is already underway. The project on the east side of Hwy. 85 will have Hood Avenue extended just south of Hudson Plaza to another roundabout that will link to Kathi Avenue and the extension of Church Street from where it currently ends at Georgia Avenue.
Hindman noted that the realignment project is ahead of schedule, with a completion date of spring 2017. Weather permitting, the project could be complete by the end of 2016, said Hindman.
