A potential vote on design and engineering phase for the Lake Peachtree spillway could come at the April 21 meeting of the Peachtree City Council.

The spillway project was a staff topic at the April 5 meeting. City Manager Jon Rorie at that meeting noted that the beginning phase of the project would require a vote to approve $300,000 for design work.

The $300,000 amount will be drawn from cash reserves, Rorie said.

Fayette County will cover approximately two-thirds of the cost of the estimated $3 million spillway project.

Rorie in an April 15 letter said, “As part of the Lake Peachtree Water Franchise Agreement, the principal spillway is anticipated to be replaced within the next three years with Fayette County participating in the replacement costs. Integrated Science and Engineering has provided a proposed scope of work for the project’s design and engineering. ISE will serve as the lead engineering firm to coordinate with Schnabel Engineering, Corblu Ecology and Annette Bowman for the design, permitting and construction replacement of the principal spillway of Lake Peachtree.”

Coming later, Rorie said on April 5, will be an estimated cost of $230,00 for construction administration and project closeout costs.

The big ticket item will be the spillway itself. The spillway and the previous costs of more than $500,000 will run $3-3.2 million.

Per a November 2015 intergovernmental agreement with Fayette County, the county will provide $2 million to bring the Lake Peachtree spillway to Category 1 status and will credit the city $1 million for future dredging.

Rorie said the city will need to make up the difference on the spillway project.

The design phase will include deciding on one of four potential spillway options.

Rorie said the potential plan calls for construction to begin in September 2017 with a substantial completion by May 2018.
