Students bound for international competition

Fayette’s health science students had a strong showing at the HOSA State Leadership Conference with 32 earning top five placements and moving on to the international competition June 22-23 in Nashville.

HOSA, an association for health science students, is an integral component of the health science education curriculum. Through the association’s competitive events programs, students are recognized for their skills and knowledge in over 55 different events that cover all areas of the healthcare industry.

Students earning fifth place or higher at the state conference advance to the International Leadership Conference where they compete not only with their American peers, but also with students from around the world including Italy, Mexico and Canada.

The 32 HOSA students representing Georgia at the international event will compete in 12 different events. The students are from Sandy Creek High, Starr’s Mill High and Whitewater High schools.

Placing first in their events are Amber Melton, Healthy Lifestyles, Whitewater High; Jack Sultan, Prepared Speaking, Whitewater High; Patrick Neuner, Healthcare Issues Exam, Whitewater High, and Ashley Hawk, Emma Smith, and Ashlyn Cole, Medical Innovation, Whitewater High.

Second-place recipients are Olivia Hayes, Clinical Specialty, Whitewater High; and Joanna Jacob, CERT Skills, Whitewater High.

Taking third-place honors are Hope Gandy, Clinical Specialty, Whitewater High; Rachel Pilato, Nursing Assistant, Starr’s Mill High; Samantha Sao, Extemporaneous Health Poster; Whitewater High; Tad White, Researched Persuasive Speaking, Whitewater High; and Aziza Griggs, Emily DeGrange, Heyley Gatewood, and Alexandra Granger, Public Service Announcement, Sandy Creek High.

Fourth-place winners are Makaylee Cannington and Thomas Adkins, CERT Skills, Whitewater High; Zach Rustick, Jack Byrum, Nick Gainous, and Caroline Conner, Medical Innovation, Whitewater High; and Mackenzie Haney, Carson Lamberth, Nicole Wiley, Kristen Reynolds, and Katie Byrum, Public Service Announcement, Whitewater High.

Placing fifth are Dylan Jenkins, Job Seeking Skills, Whitewater High; and Jordan Doggett, Cody Hulings, Savanah Hulings, and Brooklyn Doggett, Community Awareness, Whitewater High.
