Phase I of Tyrone’s Community Garden was completed Oct. 17 when the garden planning committee and members of the community came together to construct fifteen 4 by 8 raised beds.

Tyrone Garden 30290 is located in the lower playground of Tyrone Elementary School, 876 Senoia Road, which was closed in 2013. The garden installation is being coordinated by Co-Garden Coordinators Chris Madison and Patricia Graham with the help of many community members.

The mission of Tyrone Garden 30290 is to develop and maintain a productive natural raised bed garden that will encourage community engagement, education, recreation and a healthy lifestyle. A portion of the harvest will be donated and local restaurants are encouraged to rent a space. In the spring, workshops will be held in the garden.

Volunteers from the Fayette Master Gardeners Association (FMGA), with the support of the University of Georgia Fayette County Extension Office, have assisted with the project and collected tax deductible donations under their 501(c)(3) nonprofit status. Members of the community and local businesses have made generous donations that helped to complete Phase I.

“The Tyrone community will continue to receive an education from the grounds of Tyrone Elementary through sustainable gardening,” said Chris Madison. “And we are grateful for the support we have received from the local business owners and the community.”

Phase II, the construction of 30+ raised beds, is scheduled to begin before the spring of 2016. Donations and sponsors are still needed to continue the project. The funds will be used to secure a water line, obtain supplies needed to build and maintain the garden, and apply for 501(c)(3) status. To make a tax-deductible donation, send a check to Fayette Master Gardener Association (FMGA) at P.O. Box 142532, Fayetteville, GA 30214; be sure to specify “Tyrone Garden 30290” on the memo line.
