The Peachtree City Council on Oct. 15 discussed a proposed ordinance that would increase resident and non-resident golf cart fees. A vote is expected on Nov. 19.

The council previously discussed increasing fees for city residents from $12 for up to five years to a rate of $15 per year for three years for the city’s 12,000 golf carts.

The registration and fee for non-residents would increase from the current $100 per year to $115 per year.

The council when adopting the FY 2016 budget last summer accounted for the fee increase to be implemented. At play now is incorporating the measure into an ordinance that coincides with the requirement that all golf carts be registered in 2016.

Council members were told that the funds spent on path maintenance equals nine-tenths of one mill or $97.16 in property taxes for a home valued at $269,000.

The ordinance also proposed to eliminate the reciprocal registration for Tyrone residents.

City staff said there are 1,048 non-residents currently paying the fee to drive golf carts in the city.

While several city residents spoke in favor of the ordinance, there were several other non-residents who disliked the proposed changes.

One of those was Jefferson Woods homeowners association member David Kozusko.

Kozusko said the subdivision situated along Redwine Road is often used by Peachtree City students attending Starr’s Mill High School.

Kozusko said the approximate 100 feet of cart path owned and maintained by the association has experienced multiple damage from students going to and from the school.

“If your going to raise my rates, then take over maintenance of our path,” Kozusko said.

The remarks of all were noted and may, or may not, contribute to the vote expected when the council takes up the issue on Nov. 19.
