My name is Harlan Shirley and I am running for City Council Post 1. I would appreciate your support and vote. My wife Joan and I moved to Fayetteville in 1980 from Seattle, Washington. We are blessed to have all of our extended family living in the local area.
We have been members of New Hope Baptist Church for over 35 years and very active. I have taught Sunday School, served as a deacon, been involved in outreach both within our neighborhoods and to the men and women behind bars through the Bill Glass “Behind the Walls Ministry.” A recent ministry has been to help build a horseback riding arena for handicapped children on the New Hope campus.
I reached my decision when I witnessed the mayor and several councilmen, Oddo and Edwards, totally disregard the overwhelming articulated will of the people and attempted to give our Fire Department to the county, not once but twice.
Additionally, the same three entertained and supported a massive multifamily complex on Grady Avenue. Their advocacy, again, was in direct opposition of the will of the people.
I will support a balanced quality residential and business growth environment, transportation projects that will improve the flow of traffic within and through our city, and ensure the taxpayers get the best value for their tax dollars.
The Public Safety Department (police and fire) is the prime responsibility of local government and will continue to receive the bulk of our tax dollars. Public safety is, indeed, the prime responsibility of the local government.
My only investment in the city is my home and family. Thus, my only commitment is to listen and be responsive to the citizens of Fayetteville. I believe strongly that by working together with all partners we can enjoy many benefits for our city.
Thank you for taking your valuable time to read this announcement and I would appreciate your vote on Nov. 3.
Early voting begins Monday, Oct. 12, at the Fayette County Election Office on the second floor of the County Complex on Stonewall Avenue. On Nov. 3, voters living south of Ga. Highway 54 will vote at the Fayetteville County Library and voters living north of Hwy. 54 will vote at the old Fayette County High School.
