An analysis of serious crimes occurring in the unincorporated areas of Fayette County during the first six months of 2015 showed a total of 221 Part 1 crimes, according to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office. That total represents a 27 percent decrease in serious crimes compared to the same period a year ago.
“After week 26, we were 27 percent better than last year to date,” said Sheriff Barry Babb. “Deputies have been working really hard and it’s paying off.”
Crime statistics showed there were 221 Part 1 crimes during the first half of the year. Of that number, violent crimes accounted for 7 percent of Part 1 crimes while property crimes accounted for 93 percent of the total.
In that period, the Part 1 report shows one homicide, one rape, three robberies, 11 cases of aggravated assault, and 15 incidents of auto thefts.
Of the Part 1 crimes, 110 were thefts followed by 51 burglaries and 30 thefts from vehicles.
An analysis by investigators showed that the largest number of Part 1 crimes, or 40 percent, occurred between noon and 6 p.m. Further analysis showed that Mondays had the highest incidence of crimes with 31 occurring, followed by Tuesdays with approximately 29. Fridays showed the smallest number of crimes with 17.
There were nearly 60 crimes for which the incident included a span of more than one day, as is usually the case with burglaries since the victim is often not at home or at the place of business when the crime occurred.
As for the time of day, higher concentrations of Part 1 crimes showed those occurring between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Mondays.
The report also provided a breakdown of the areas of the unincorporated county where Part 1 crimes occurred.
Approximately 55 crimes occurred in Zone 1 that includes the unincorporated areas of northwest Fayette. The hot spot in the zone is the Landmark Mobile Home Park on Milam Road.
Zone 3, which includes areas of northeast Fayette, as well as the areas of Ga. highways 279 and 314, showed approximately 47 Part 1 crimes during the period.
Zones 4 and 5 each experienced 40 Part 1 crimes. Zone 4 includes the unincorporated areas of central and west Fayette while Zone 5 covers east Fayette south of Ga. Highway 54 East and most all of south Fayette.
Zone 2, which includes portions of north central Fayette, had the fewest number of Part 1 crime with approximately 38.
