If you have ever been to Piedmont Fayette Hospital, you have seen the men and women proudly wearing their red jackets in nearly every area of the facility. They are members of the Piedmont Fayette Hospital Auxiliary.
In addition to volunteering their time throughout the hospital, the Auxiliary holds blood drives throughout the year and raises funds to support the hospital, provide scholarships and support community programs. Last week the group presented Piedmont Fayette with a $170,000 gift in support for hospital programs, equipment and other services.
The Piedmont Fayette Hospital Auxiliary was founded in 1997 and supports patients, families, staff and the community. Members assist the hospital in numerous service areas including emergency services, the Thomas F. Chapman Cancer Wellness Center, the fitness center, maternity and courtesy golf cart shuttle among many others.
There are opportunities open to adults, ages 18 and older, five days a week, with some service areas available seven days a week, nights and weekends. Over the years, the Auxiliary has also gifted wheelchairs, cardiac monitoring equipment and neonatal beds for premature infants, as well as gardens, an aquarium for the Cancer Wellness Center, holiday decorations and much more.
“The members of the Auxiliary have given more than 890,000 hours of service since 1997,” said Piedmont Fayette CEO Michael Burnett. “They play an important role in the outstanding health care our patients receive each day.”
Piedmont Fayette certainly benefits from the efforts of the Auxiliary, but the members benefit as well. Not only do they forge friendships with other volunteers, patients and members of hospital staff, but they also receive free/discounted meals, a free flu vaccine, the employee discount to the fitness center, two annual banquets and numerous recognition programs.
Currently, there are more than 250 members assisting Piedmont Fayette in a myriad of ways, but there is always a need for more people to get involved.
