The Cross Roads Garden Club in Coweta County is celebrating its 50th anniversary. The club was originally named the Newton Estates Garden Club in College Park and was organized on May 19, 1965 at the home of Daisy McMeekin with 19 charter members.
The objectives of the club were to encourage interest in all phases of home gardening and to promote better horticulture practices, civic beauty and the conservation of natural resources. The objectives were amended in 1987 to include “interest in homemaking”.
Members adopted The Club’s Conservation Pledge: “I give my pledge, as an American, to save and faithfully defend from waste, the natural resources of my country, its soils, minerals, forests, waters and wildlife.”
Over time members began to move to other metropolitan areas, resulting in a name change for the club. In 1970, members voted to rename the club: The Cross Roads Garden Club. Meeting were held mostly in members homes but many field trips to local nurseries, farms and workshops were enjoyed over the last 30 years in the Newnan, Sharpsburg, Peachtree City, Fayetteville and Jonesboro areas.
