Akshay Patel, Hunter Wallace, Kentez Craig, Jalen Brooks, and Sahil Patel of Boy Scout Troop 172 of New Hope Baptist Church were recognized May 3 for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout.

These five boys have been together since they were Cub Scouts and have risen through the ranks to achieve this highest rank in Boy Scouts, which only 3-6 percent of all scouts do.

Some of the requirements to reach this rank include a minimum of 21 Merit Badges (these are subjects that a scout must learn about and be proficient in), service in many leadership positions in the troop, demonstrating that they live by the principles of the Scout Oath and Law, and design and execution of an Eagle Project that will benefit their community.

Akshay’s Eagle project benefited the Children’s Healthcare Atlanta with a food and toy donation. Hunter’s project benefited the 4 H Organization of Fayette County, where he built a shelter for athletes and parents. Kentez’s project benefited Our Lady of Mercy High School where he built benches and bleachers for the tennis team, and spectators. Jalen’s project benefited The Bloom Closet through a donation of clothes for orphaned children. Sahil’s project benefited Orrs Elementary School in Griffin where he designed and created an outdoor courtyard and classroom.

Each scout has benefited greatly from the Boy Scouts of America. They have learned many important life skills and have become mature and responsible adults through this training. They are graduating high school this month and going on to careers in medicine, law, engineering, sports medicine, and business.
