Dr. Kevin Demmitt, a Peachtree City resident and a 21-year veteran faculty member and administrator at Clayton State University, has been named provost and vice president for Academic Affairs.
The appointment comes exactly one year after his appointment as the University’s interim provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, and following an extensive national search.
The announcement was made by Clayton State President Dr. Thomas Hynes, who highlighted many of Demmitt’s contributions to the university.
“His exceptional work during his career at Clayton State, and especially his actions over the last academic year, give us confidence that he is best positioned to lead academic affairs forward,” Hynes said in an email to the Clayton State campus.
Demmitt has served the university in a wide variety of capacities over the last 21 years, most recently in the Office of Academic Affairs as associate vice president for Extended Programs. Included in those leadership responsibilities has been oversight of Clayton State’s off-campus sites – notably the Peachtree City and Henry County locations – as well as, on-line offerings, the growing dual enrollment program, now one of the largest in the University System of Georgia, and the Office of International Programs.
“His breadth of experiences, together with his strong commitment to academic excellence, and collaborations across programs and divisions, make him an exceptional candidate for this position,” Hynes said. “He has been widely praised for his ability to foster collaboration across colleges and schools. He has put into action a broad outline for reforming the ways in which we advise students — being intrusive, and providing advisors data about students that further increase the chances for student success.”
Hynes also noted that Demmitt has successfully led his colleagues in the development of new academic programs, both undergraduate and graduate, and has, “framed existing academic programs to provide all our students more options for degree completion and academic success.”
Demmitt said “I appreciate the support of President Hynes and the members of the search committee in giving me this opportunity to be a part of the leadership team at Clayton State University. To me, it is all about preparing as many students as possible to achieve their personal and professional goals, and contribute to their communities. Working with so many talented faculty and staff who share this same passion makes it a joy to come to work every day.”
