East Coweta High School Principal Evan Horton will soon be saying good-bye to ECHS and turning his focus to all students across the Coweta County School System. Horton has been named as the school system’s new Director of Student Services.
In his new position, Horton beginning in July will oversee all student discipline and student code of conduct matters, school system disciplinary policies and disciplinary student tribunals, said school system spokesman Dean Jackson.
Horton will also oversee and coordinate programs dealing with student attendance, positive behavior interventions and support and will oversee the school system’s alternative schools, said Jackson, adding that Horton will also serve as a liaison between the school system, school resource officers and law enforcement in general.
A 17-year educator, Horton began teaching in 1998 at Maxwell Elementary School in Tuscaloosa, Alabama before coming to Coweta County in 1999.
In Coweta, Horton taught civics and history and coached basketball, baseball and cross country at Newnan High School, then at Northgate High School, where he also served as an assistant football coach, head basketball coach, and assistant athletic director, Jackson said.
Horton became an assistant principal at East Coweta High School in 2006 and became the ECHS athletic director in 2008. He has served as ECHS Principal since 2012.
Horton earned his Bachelor’s degree in Education and Human Performance Studies from the University of Alabama in 1998, his Master’s degree in Public Administration from Troy State University in 2005, a Leadership certification from the State University of West Georgia in 2006, and an Education Specialist degree in Administration from Georgia College and State University in 2009.
