Laura Kennedy, a social studies teacher at Whitewater Middle School, has been named Georgia’s “Outstanding American History Teacher for 2015” by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).

She was the DAR James Waldrop Chapter winner and represented Fayette County in the Georgia competition, where she was chosen as the winner from more than 100 nominations made from across the state.

The award recognizes notable teachers of American history and related fields, such as social studies, government, and citizenship, in grades five through 12. Candidates must have an incisive knowledge of American history, and foster a spirit of patriotism and loyal support for the country and constitutional government.

Each year DAR chapters around the state sponsor nominees for the award. Becky Ryckeley, the school system’s social studies coordinator, nominated Kennedy for this year’s honor.
