The Spivey Hall Children’s Choir has been invited to perform at the national conference of the American Choir Directors Association, which comes with an opportunity to perform at the Mormon Tabernacle, home of the famed Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

Officials of Clayton State University’s Spivey Hall announced the invitation and said choirs from around the world will perform at both the Salt Lake City Tabernacle, known as the Mormon Tabernacle, and Abravanel Hall. The conference is set for Feb. 23 – 26 in Salt Lake City.
The Spivey Hall Children’s Choir will present its 30 minute recital twice on Wednesday, Feb. 25, first at 1:30 p.m. in the Salt Lake City Tabernacle and again at 4:15 p.m. in Abravanel Hall, home to the Utah Symphony.

“Our program for the convention is a celebration of music, our deepest beliefs, our profound gratefulness and our joy,” said founding director Martha Shaw. “We all can’t wait to sing.”

The choir program consists of three choirs and draws members from 17 metro-Atlanta counties. Membership and placement in the choirs is by audition, based on artistic merit and teacher recommendations.

“It is a great honor to be invited to sing for the national conference of the American Choral Directors Association,” Shaw said. “I have great respect for my colleagues, and being asked to sing for them is a responsibility that I feel very deeply. We are given the opportunity to give back to those who spend their entire lives giving their music to others.”

The American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) is a nonprofit music-education organization found in 1959 to advance choral music.
Hundreds of choirs from around the world submit audition recordings every two years and judges are given the audition recordings as unmarked, anonymous entries. They listen for the best musical sound and quality and choose organizations they feel exhibit the highest model of artistry, with a performing repertoire that is appropriately challenging for the age group and experience level represented.

The Spivey Hall Children’s Choir was one of only 45 choirs that made the final cut.
