It was years in the making but on Nov. 19 the completed Fire Station No. 3 on Jenkins Road at Ga. Highway 74 was unveiled. Funded by the Fayette County Fire Fund, the 9,600 sq. ft. station in north Fayette County is situated on 6.6 acres and will accommodate fire service needs for the next half-century.

The opening was attended by firefighters from in and around Fayette and Fulton counties and by elected officials from Fayette County, Tyrone and Peachtree City.

Situated on Jenkins Road at the intersection of Hwy. 74, the $1.8 million station on 6.6 acres totals 9,600 sq. ft. and will serve as a double-engine company. Chief David Scarbrough said the three drive-thru bays will accommodate six engines in the future.

“The station was built to accommodate future needs for up to 50 years due to the continuing growth of north Fayette County,” Scarbrough said.

The $1.8 million project was funded by the Fayette County Fire Tax Fund.

Scarbrough said an open house for community residents will be held at the station in the coming weeks.

The fire station site will provide room for a future water tower that has been previously discussed. Once constructed at some point in the future, the water tower could be positioned at the rear of the 6.6-acre property.

Station No. 3 will replace the long-used station on Senoia Road in Tyrone. Closing the Senoia Road station in favor of the new location was a matter of some local controversy in recent years, with some in the town maintaining a new station situated in the immediate vicinity would be preferable to relocating the station on the north side of town.

County officials maintained that moving the station to the north would better meet the needs of the growing north Fayette area.

Also cited in the decision to relocate was an ongoing problem with the fire station’s septic system. The new station is served by sewer.
