Incumbent Fayette County Commissioner Steve Brown won re-election Tuesday, avoiding a runoff despite a three-man field for the District 3 seat.
This was the only chance most Peachtree City residents will have to elect a county commissioner with the advent of district voting, which scraps the at-large format that allowed all county residents to cast votes for all five members of the county commission and the board of education.
Brown won 52.6 percent of the vote over his fellow former Peachtree City mayors Harold Logsdon (39.8 percent) and Don Haddix (7.54 percent). Brown faces no Democrat challenger in the November general election.
Just 13.5 percent of the 13,889 registered voters in District 3 bothered to cast a ballot in the election.
The other big area race on the ticket, with seven candidates seeking to replace Ronnie Chance of Tyrone as the District 16 state senator, ended in a runoff as expected. Tyrone financial planner Marty Harbin will face off against Fayetteville attorney David Studdard in the July 22 runoff election.
Harbin led the pack with 32.31 percent of the vote, well short of the 50 percent plus one vote minimum necessary for victory. Studdard came in second with 25.21 percent. Erik A. Manning was third with 16.1 percent and Bob Barnard finished with 10.44 percent as the remaining three candidates finished in single digits.
