Three Fayette girls track athletes win state titles

Three local athletes won state championships over the weekend in the Georgia High School Association girls track and field meet in Albany.

Chinyere Njoku took first place in the 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles to lead the Fayette County Lady Tigers to a fourth-place team finish in AAAA.

Leah Banks of Our Lady of Mercy won the long jump as the Lady Bobcats came in fifth in A, while Noelle Parker won the AAAAA state title in the shot put for the Whitewater Lady Wildcats.

Fayette County took third in the 4×100-meter relay and fourth in the 4×400 to rack up more team points. Njoku placed seventh in the shot put and Jessica Watkins was sixth in both hurdles events.

Alexis Willis was Sandy Creek’s only athlete to score at the state meet, finishing fifth in the 300-meter hurdles.

OLM’s team finish was also aided by relay performances, second in the 4×100 and third in the 4×400. Banks finished sixth in the 200-meter dash and second in the 400 meters, while Deja Barthell picked up seventh in the 100 meters and fifth in the triple jump. Anike Thomas was fifth in the high jump.

Landmark came in second as a team in A without finishing first in any single event. Kathryn Foreman was second in the 1600-meter run and the 3200-meter run, while Nicole Fegans was fifth and third at those distances. Jordan Boyd came in fourth in both hurdles events, while Rachel Morley was fifth in the 100-meter hurdles, second in the 300-meter hurdles and fifth in the discus throw. The 4×400-meter relay team finished fifth.

In AAAAA competition, Parker came in sixth in the discus throw and her two events gave Whitewater all of its points for a 12th-place team finish.

Starr’s Mill was tenth as a team, with Alexis Farley finishing sixth in the 100-meter hurdles, seventh in the long jump and fourth in the triple jump. Annika Strauss was sixth in the pole vault, Madeline Hammond tied for sixth in the high jump and Hailey Gollnick was seventh in the 3200-meter run.

McIntosh’s Alyssa LeClaire placed third at 800 meters and sixth at 1600 meters.
