BASEBALL: Whitewater and Starr’s Mill will be back in action on the diamond this afternoon in separate brackets of the AAAAA state baseball tournament after taking care of business over the weekend.
The Wildcats, the top seed out of Region 4-AAAAA, hosted Lakeside-Evans Friday and swept a doubleheader, winning 8-3 and 6-0. They will be back at home for the second round with a best-of-three series against Hardaway-Effingham County, starting today with a doubleheader and a third game tomorrow if necessary.
The Panthers won their first-round series at home against Evans in three games. After winning 12-0 and losing 6-5 Friday, they came out on top with a 4-1 win Saturday to earn a spot in the second round. They will be on the road today against Harris County.
In the A Private classification, Landmark grabbed the 16th spot in the final power rankings and the last slot in the state tournament. But that meant a trip to Henry County to face top-ranked ELCA, and the War Eagles were swept Friday 12-5 and 16-5.
GOLF: Sectionals took place Monday.
[In Region 4-AAAAA the Starr’s Mill boys finished first and qualified for state as a team. Andrew Crockett of the Panthers was low medalist in the region finals. McIntosh qualified for sectionals due to a third-place finish. On the girls’ side, Starr’s Mill came in second and qualified for sectionals.The Fayette County Lady Tigers finished second in Region 5-AAAA and qualified for sectionals.
Landmark won the Area 3-Private team titles for boys and girls, which means both teams move on to state. The War Eagles also had the two low medalists: Jake Milanowski for the boys and Jordan Daniel for the girls.]
State championships are May 19 at various courses around Georgia.
LACROSSE: First-round games were yesterday and the second round is scheduled for Friday in the A-AAAAA tournament, which has 16 teams.
For the girls, McIntosh is the top seed from Area 1 and opened at home against River Ridge. A win would mean another home game against Marist or Blessed Trinity.
The Starr’s Mill girls finished second in Area 1 and hosted Pope. With a win they would play at home against Wesleyan or on the road at St. Pius.
On the boys’ side, McIntosh reached the state playoffs as the third-seeded team in Area 1, which meant a road game against Allatoona in the first round. Should they play in the second round, it will be at Northview or against Benedictine at home.
SOCCER: McIntosh continued its perfect season with a 2-0 win over Evans in the first round of the AAAAA boys’ state tournament. That gave the Chiefs a home match yesterday against Thomas County-Central.
Starr’s Mill hosted Warner Robins Saturday after a rain date and lost 4-2.
The Lady Panthers reached the second round of the AAAAA girls’ bracket with a 4-0 win over Evans last week. They take on Northside-Columbus or Effingham County today at home.
McIntosh downed Greenbrier in the first round and has a road match today against Glynn Academy.
In the A classification, the boys’ teams from Our Lady of Mercy and Landmark played in separate second-round matches yesterday. The Bobcats took on First Presbyterian at home after a first-round bye, while the War Eagles traveled to Brookstone after defeating Calvary Day 2-1 in the first round.
For the girls, Our Lady of Mercy hosts Brookstone today after a first-round bye. Landmark fell 4-0 to Savannah Country Day in the first round.
Quarterfinal matches are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, with semifinals next Tuesday and Wednesday. The championships in all classifications are the weekend of May 16-17.
TENNIS: The Starr’s Mill Lady Panthers face Northview today in the AAAAA state semifinals, having dispatched Jones County (4-0), Ware County (5-0) and Lakeside-Evans (4-1) in the previous rounds.
McIntosh defeated Evans 4-1 and Bainbridge 5-0 but lost 3-0 to Glynn Academy in the quarterfinals.
In boys’ action, Starr’s Mill reached the quarterfinals with wins over Houston County (5-0) and Effingham County (5-0) before coming up short in a 3-2 loss to Lakeside-Evans. McIntosh won 4-0 over Greenbrier before losing 3-0 to Glynn Academy in the second round.
The state finals are Saturday at Clayton County International Park.
