A Peachtree City woman was killed Thursday in a chain-reaction crash on Interstate 75 in Acworth Thursday afternoon, according to the Cobb County Police Department.

Barbara Phenicie, 71, was the front-seat passenger in a 2011 Chrysler Town and Country minivan that was struck from behind by a BMW which caught fire during the eight-vehicle pileup, police said.

Mrs. Phenicie’s husband, Dale, 72, and son, Jonathan, 38 were treated at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital for non life-threatening injuries, police said.

The crash occurred at 2:20 p.m. Thursday in the northbound lanes of the interstate north of the Hickory Grove overpass as traffic was slowing or stopping due to a construction zone, police said.

The first collision occured when a white 2005 Volvo semi tractor trailer rear-ended the BMW, thrusting it into the Phenicies’ vehicle, police said. The driver of the BMW, whose name has not been released, also died in the crash, police said.

A total of five people were injured in the crash.

The crash scene spread out across four travel lanes and both emergency lanes, police said.
