The intersection at Pylant Street and Ga. Highway 16 in Senoia has long been a traffic safety concern. Remedying the concerns by reconfiguring the intersection and replacing the bridge a short distance away came closer to reality Monday when the Senoia City County awarded a $215,000 design and engineering contract to AMEC Environment and Infrastructure, Inc.
The vote Monday night will begin the process for the $1.7 million project that will likely take several years to complete.
The project involves reconstructing the existing intersection at Hwy. 16 and Pylant Street and replacing the existing bridge over Dead Oak Creek on Pylant Street across from the library.
City Administrator Richard Ferry noted that Pylant Street currently intersects with Hwy. 16 at a severely skewed angle and on a grade.
Pertaining to the current bridge which services the outfall for Marimac Lakes, Ferry said it is narrow and does not meet current design standards.
Scope of work for the contract awarded to AMEC includes the various aspects of the design and engineering phases of the project.
The project is being funded by the city and by the federal Roadway Operations and Safety Program which are reimbursable through the Ga. Dept. of Transportation.
