The Peachtree City Council last week approved spending $991,180 to rehabilitate the dam at the Rockspray pond in south Peachtree City to prevent it from breaching and potentially flooding downstream properties.
The project will be similar to the work done at the Huddleston Pond dam, according to Public Works Director Mark Caspar. Trees and roots will be removed and some unsuitable soils will be replaced along with significant work to the spillway, Caspar said.
The city put in a temporary bypass spillway several years ago to prevent flooding on a temporary basis until the rehabilitation project could commence in full, Caspar said.
Money for the project will come from the city’s stormwater utility, which is paid for by fees assessed on individual parcels based on their total amount of impervious surface. The theory behind that is that rain hitting impervious surfaces must run off somewhere into the city’s stormwater collection system.
The contract was awarded to low bidder North Georgia Concrete.
