Let the sewer lines be extended, the Fayetteville City Council said last week.
Construction at Pinewood Atlanta Studios is underway with a planned opening in January. Tied to the development is the installation by Fayetteville of the section of sewer lines to serve Pinewood and other related projects expected in the area of Veterans Parkway and Sandy Creek Road. The council on Sept. 5 unanimously approved a $1.596 million sewer extension bid.
“This is Phase I of the sewer master plan to provide sewer capacity to the west Fayetteville area,” Fayetteville Public Services Director Chris Hindman said in an Aug. 27 letter.
Phase I consists of construction of a new pump station, installing approximately 4,400 linear feet for 12 gravity sewer lines, 19 manholes and approximately 3,000 linear feet of force main, Hindman said.
The project calls for running sewer lines across across Hwy. 54 from the south and extending the lines up a portion of Sandy Creek Road south of Veterans Parkway then to the northeast where the new pump station will be located. Sewer lines from that point will extend northwest to the south side of the Pinewood Atlanta Studios property.
The sewer project is expected to get underway quickly since Pinewood is expected to begin operations in January.
Hindman during the discussion noted that developers will be responsible for sewer projects on the remaining portions of the 1,200 acres annexed into the city in August.
Staff recommended and the council unanimously approved awarding the low bid of $1,595,911 to Crawford Grading, Inc. Other project bidders included Strack, Inc. at $1.685 million, Ruby Collins, Inc. at $1.687 million, Brent Scarbrough and Company, Inc. at $1.73 million and Site Engineering, Inc. at $2.35 million.
Hindman said the project will be funded by the city’s water and sewer fund reserves and by a bond issue. The amount of funding needed to be utilized through a bond issued is currently being evaluated, Hindman said, adding that city staff would evaluate the project to determine if costs can be reduced.
Fayetteville recently annexed approximately 1,200 acres on the city’s west side, with nearly all the acreage existing north of Ga. Highway 54 West from Tyrone Road on the west to east of Sandy Creek Road to the east and to the Veterans Parkway/Sandy Creek Road area to the north.
Though extending sewer lines to the entire 1,200-acre area was discussed at the City Council retreat in the spring, council members decided to opt for installing sewer service to the Pinewood Atlanta Studios area, the first of the numerous developments that will populate the annexed area in the coming years.
