The time is just around the corner for those interested in political office in Senoia make a decision. Qualifying for mayor and two seats on the Senoia City Council will be held Aug. 26-28. Mayor Robert Belisle will not seek re-election while Councilman Larry Owens said he will qualify to run for mayor.

The mayor’s seat will be open since Robert Belisle has long-maintained that he will not seek re-election.

Qualifying will also include the Post 1 seat held by Owens.

The term held by Post 2 Councilman Jeff Fisher is also set to expire this year. Fisher confirmed recently that he will be seeking re-election.

The qualifying period will be held Aug. 26-28. Those interested can qualify between 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. at City Hall on Main Street. The qualifying fee for the mayor’s seat is $360 and $90 for council seats.

Though Senoia practices at-large voting, the difference this year is that candidates must qualify for a specific post. The former practice of voting at-large and the top vote-getters winning the open seats was replaced by voting for a specific seat on the council due to changes in the city charter and in state law.

Those qualifying should also visit www.ethics.ga.gov to become familiar with state-required candidate forms.

The deadline for registering to vote in the November election is Oct 7.
