The intersection at Ga. Highway 154 and Old Ga. Highway 16 at East Coweta High School has been the site of numerous traffic accidents and a fatality. To address the problems with the intersection, the Coweta County Commission on July 23 approved funds to have a survey completed that could lead to state-funded safety improvements.
The unanimous vote by commissioners approved $4,800 to conduct the survey recommended by County Administrator Michael Fouts and Transportation and Engineering Director Todd Handley.
Fouts during the brief presentation said the intersection has been the site of a number of traffic accidents, the most recent of which resulted in a fatality. Some on the commission also noted the issues with the intersection.
Those familiar with the area are aware that when traveling south on Hwy. 154 the road takes a relatively sharp turn to the east just past East Coweta High School where Old Hwy. 16 intersects from the west on the south side of the campus.
Fouts said county staff recently discussed the intersection with representatives of the Ga. Dept. of Transportation (DOT). Fouts told commissioners DOT has funds available for safety improvement projects, with representatives requesting that Coweta conduct the survey so the information obtained from it could be used in the design of a possible intersection improvement project.
Fouts said the potential for installing a stop sign at the intersection had been discussed as a possible accident mitigation tool, adding that discussions with DOT will continue once the survey has been completed.
