Isabel Gomez, 90, of Peachtree City passed away peacefully at Doctor’s Hospice on May 25, 2013.
She was born to the late Juan Bautista and Madalena Porto on Dec. 26, 1922 in the small Basque town of Gauteguiz de Arteaga, near Guernica in northern Spain.
Isabel survived the Spanish Civil War and the infamous April 26, 1937 bombing of Guernica, later memorialized in Pablo Picasso’s famous painting Guernica. In the 1950’s she followed her older brother to Venezuela where she opened a beauty salon and met her future husband of 48 years the late Luis Gomez of Murcia Spain. After the birth of their first child in 1958, they moved to the Cuban Island, Isla de Pinos and opened a small restaurant and Hotel. In the wake of the Cuban Revolution the family returned to Venezuela in 1961 and eventually immigrated to the United States in 1962. After initially residing in Miami, the family moved to Lexington Mass. where her husband eventually found employment as a high school Spanish teacher at Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H. and pursued that career for 30 years in various private preparatory schools in New England and Michigan. Following her husband’s death in 2005, she moved to Peachtree City to be closer to her grandchildren.
Her youngest son Cesar, her husband Luis and her brother Antonio, preceded Isabel in death.
She is survived by her two sons, four grandchildren and her sister Dominica.
A memorial service were held on Saturday, July 13, 2013 at Carmichael-Hemperley Funeral Home in Peachtree City, Ga.
