July 4 parades and fireworks in Peachtree City and Newnan saw a rare cancellation due to large amounts of rain and the expectation of thunderstorms and lightning. While no significant storm damage was reported in either county, rain clouds did bring nearly 4 inches of rain to Peachtree City and 2-5 inches across Coweta County.
The National Weather Service reported Peachtree City receiving 2.7 inches of rain on Wednesday and another 1.1 inches on Thursday. And Coweta County Emergency Management Director Jay Jones said Coweta received 2-5 inches in various locations around the county during Wednesday and Thursday.
Fayette County Fire and Emergency Services spokesman Donnie Davis said even the Tinsley Mill area of Peachtree City was spared from the large volume of rain that moved through the area during the two-day period.
“We were really lucky and we’re holding tight given the amount of water continuing to move through the Fayette County in streams and creeks,” Davis said.
Jones said aside from the large volume of rain in Coweta, only minor flooding of a temporary nature occurred along some roadways. One of those areas was along Ga. Highway 85 near Senoia where Line Creek experienced some temporary flooding activity.
The only significant obstacles to the inclement weather occurred on the CSX railroad line near U.S. Highway 29 and the Timber Ridge subdivision. Jones said the tracks were temporarily closed with four trains backed up and waiting until crews could repair a culvert running under the tracks.
