Looking for a new way to serve locally that the whole family can do?
Check out the new Harvest for Real Life U-Pick Berry Patch at Dogwood Church in Tyrone. It’s a great way to have the whole family serve together and pick berries to help local families going through the hard times in life.
Every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday (9-11 a.m.) beginning this month, are U-Pick days. Members of the community can pick some for others and take some home at no cost to them as a gift … or simply pick and give.
And be sure to stop out on Saturday, June 15 for a pastry, coffee, and a tour during the ribbon cutting/open house from 9-11 a.m.
Job loss, health issues, death, divorces … life is filled with unexpected twists and turns. The Real Life Center is designed to step in and help – and the orchard is one way to help provide during those hard times.
The orchard was an idea that came to Jeff Meyers, as he was trying to figure out how he could use his skills to make a difference. After many years of operating and managing one of the largest radio controlled airplane shows, he realized that he had gained many skills that could transfer to help him manage other projects. After he visited the Real Life Center food pantry and saw the need to provide fresh healthy food, the idea came to him to compliment the many vegetables that were already being donated. Harvest for Real Life went from just a thought to a reality -— and now after thousands of hours of volunteer time by Jeff and many others, the generosity of many local businesses, a local EMC Round Up grant and many individuals — it’s the first season of harvest for the orchard.
The orchard will eventually produce 30,000 lbs. of fruit each year, starting now with blackberries and blueberries, and the project needs help.
“It’s a great way to help your neighbor” says Cathy Berggren, executive director of the Real Life Center. “So often we wonder how we can help. Here is a great, easy way to make a difference. Jeff has done an outstanding job with the help of many helping hands. It is really a reflection of the community we live in. The orchard is on Dogwood Church property at 974 Ga. Hwy. 74 N., Tyrone.
